Can I scrap my car if I have lost the keys?

Yes. Tell us the keys are missing when you book and the driver comes ready to winch the car on. There is a small deduction for no keys.

Yes. Lost keys do not stop a car being scrapped. Tell us the keys are missing when you book, and the driver comes with the kit to winch the car onto the lorry. You still need to show you are the registered keeper, with photo ID and proof of address. For broken cars in general, see selling a non-runner.

Why we need to know before we arrive

A car with no keys usually has its steering lock on and may be stuck in gear or in park. Our drivers load these all the time, but it takes different kit and a bit more time on the job. If we know in advance, we send the right lorry and plan the day around it, so nobody waits.

Does it change the price?

A little. We take a small amount off a car with no keys, because it takes more time and different kit to load. Tell us the keys are missing when you book, so the price you agree already allows for it. A surprise on the day is what changes a price, so it pays to be upfront.

Where the car is matters more than the keys

A car on a drive or at the kerb is easy. A car in a locked garage, a tight underground car park, or with a flat tyre against a wall takes more planning. Tell us when you book, and send a photo if it is awkward. We would rather know than turn up with the wrong lorry.

What if the keys turn up later?

Throw them away or keep them as a keyring. Once the car has been scrapped and the DVLA has been told, the keys are no use to anyone.

Quick answers

Will you take a car with no keys and no V5C? Yes, if you can prove you are the registered keeper with photo ID and proof of address.

Do I need to be there? No. The car can be left for us to collect, as long as we know where it is and can get to it.

Can you take a car that is locked? Yes. We do not need to get inside it to load it.
