What actually moves the price
Weight
The floor under every scrap price is the metal itself, and metal is sold by weight. A 1,100 kg supermini simply contains less steel than a 2,500 kg 4x4, which is why big vehicles are worth more even when they are in worse condition. We use the DVLA kerb weight where it is available rather than guessing from the body style.
The catalytic converter
Catalytic converters contain platinum, palladium and rhodium, and they are worth real money. A car with its converter still fitted is worth noticeably more than the same car with the converter cut out — which is why theft is so common. If yours has been stolen, say so on the quote form and we will price accordingly.
Whether it is complete
A vehicle that has already been picked over for parts has lost most of what makes it worth more than its weight in steel. Missing engine, gearbox, wheels, seats or body panels all reduce the figure.
Parts demand for that model
Some vehicles are worth more broken than crushed. Transits, Sprinters and Land Rovers have strong parts demand; hybrids carry battery and catalyst value. Very common older superminis are oversupplied, so they tend to sit at scrap value.
Where you are
Collection has to be paid for out of the price. Dense urban areas with a nearby treatment facility cost less to service than a farm at the end of a single-track road, and prices reflect that. We show any area adjustment on your quote instead of hiding it.
The scrap metal market
Underneath all of this, ferrous scrap prices move week to week with global demand. We update our rates against the market, so a quote is valid for a limited period rather than indefinitely.
Beware of prices that look too good
If an offer is far above everyone else, it usually gets renegotiated on your driveway once the vehicle is on the truck. Ask two questions before you commit: is the price guaranteed in writing, and will you be paid by bank transfer? Cash payment for a scrap vehicle is illegal in England and Wales, and an operator willing to break that rule is unlikely to be careful with the rest.
