The common MOT failures we see
Corrosion of the sills, chassis legs and suspension mounts on cars over twelve years old; worn suspension arms and bushes; brake pipes; emissions failures on older diesels and petrols with tired catalytic converters; and long lists of “minor” items — bulbs, tyres, wipers, washers — that add up to a bill nobody wants to pay on a £600 car. A garage will often tell you honestly that it is not worth it. That is where we come in.
What happens
Enter the registration and postcode and we price the car on its weight and condition. Tell us it has no MOT — it changes nothing about the price, but it tells the driver to expect a car that may not be safe to move under its own power. Choose a collection day; we come with a recovery truck, check your ID, pay by bank transfer and load it. We then issue the Certificate of Destruction and notify the DVLA.
Before you decide
Check the car’s actual value on a classified site. If similar cars with a fresh MOT are selling for £1,500 and the repair quote is £700, it may be worth fixing. If they are selling for £600 and the quote is £900, it is not. Our price is free to get and takes thirty seconds, so get it first and do the sums with real numbers.
Common questions
Can I drive a car that has failed its MOT?
Only to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for the repairs identified, and only if it is safe. If the test found a “dangerous” defect you cannot drive it at all. Driving without an MOT otherwise risks a fine of up to £1,000 and invalidates your insurance, which is why we collect rather than ask you to bring it in.
Is a car with no MOT worth less?
Not as scrap. The MOT tells you about the car’s roadworthiness, not its weight or what parts are on it. A failed car with its catalytic converter and wheels is worth exactly what a passed one is.
Should I fix it or scrap it?
A rough rule: if the repair quote is more than the car would sell for afterwards, it is not worth doing. Get our scrap price, look at the car’s likely resale value on the classifieds, and compare. Most cars failing on corrosion, suspension and emissions together are past the point.
The MOT ran out and the car has been on the drive — do I owe anything?
Only if it was untaxed and not declared SORN, in which case the DVLA may have sent a penalty. Scrapping it now and getting the Certificate of Destruction draws a line under it; the DVLA record shows the car has gone.
